A survey carried out among IDEA CA alumni in March 2019 has revealed the organization’s positive role in enhancing skills set of the youth and enriching their value system.

The survey was carried out among 223 alumni who come from Kyrgyzstan (74.4%), Tajikistan (9.9%) Kazakhstan (9.4%) as well as Russia and Ukraine.

According to the survey results, alumni have acquired a wide range of skills during the workshops organized by IDEA CA.

Nadira Masiumova (23) is an active member of civil society in Kyrgyzstan. She does advocacy for Kyrgyz Indigo, a local LGBTIQ organization based in Bishek that aims to build a democratic society where everyone – including LGBTIQ people - can enjoy their freedoms. Nadira attributes her success in this field to her experience in debating.

“Democracy Cup” brought together 60 teams from Narin, Osh, Talass and Issik-Kul regions. We held 2 debate tournaments on 22 September and 6-7 October in Osh and Bishkek as part of the “European Union for Democracy” campaign for raising young people’s awareness of democracy and democratic processes.

Much of IDEA CA’s work is based on the idea of peer-to-peer learning - teaching your peers is a great way of reinforcing knowledge through practise. Accordingly, we conducted a Training of Trainers workshop for students from five schools in Issyk-Ata on 7-9 December 2018. At the workshop, the students learned how to work with an audience, design modules, and efficient approaches to sharing their knowledge and experience.

An online survey carried out among IDEA CA’s alumni has shown that the organization is popular among young people. The respondents reported that the workshops and other events organized by IDEA CA taught them important soft skills such as critical thinking and argumentation and increased their overall civic awareness. Some respondents even linked their career success with IDEA CA’s projects; 41.7% of respondents reported that their career choices have been influenced by their participation in IDEA CA’s events.

Hosting summer debate schools are an old and much loved tradition in IDEA CA and we were delighted to be able to do so again this year, with the courses finishing in August. The goal of these courses is to help young people achieve their potential, with a particular emphasis on their debate skills and critical and analytical thinking.

As part of the Demilgeluu Jashtar project, a debate tournament was held on 15 September 2018. The tournament was attended by 50 schoolchildren from Naryn and Kochkor and saw debaters discuss youth participation in decision-making processes at the local level, allocation of quotas for young people in local councils, and issues of regional development.

Alumni of the 2017 media camp completed a series of workshops on civic journalism and debate in Kazakhstan (Karaganda) and Tajikistan (Dushanbe). An iTalk was also held on the topic of Media and Ethics, which saw speakers discussing journalism ethics, storytelling, fact checking, and civic activism.

As part of the Child and Youth Friendly Kyrgyzstan project, two training of trainers workshops were held in Isyk-Ata and Suzak districts for ten school parliaments (five in each district) June 21-26.

The purpose of the training was to teach school students facilitation skills and how to organize and manage their election processes. The training was conducted in Kyrgyz and Russian by IDEA CA’s experienced trainers, Darika Amanbaeva and Asylbek Rakhmanov.
