As part of the Demilgeluu Jashtar project, a debate tournament was held on 15 September 2018. The tournament was attended by 50 schoolchildren from Naryn and Kochkor and saw debaters discuss youth participation in decision-making processes at the local level, allocation of quotas for young people in local councils, and issues of regional development.
“The students have been learning about debate and the tournament was an excellent opportunity for them to apply their skills in practice, get to know debaters from different schools, and expand their debate clubs,” said Bibinur Bolotkanova, the project coordinator.
Debate is a role-playing intellectual game in which one team presents a certain idea and the other team opposes it. The criteria for winning is the quality of the argument and the persuasiveness of the team’s performance. A debate tournament is a platform for the construction of structured argumentation and analysis of information, as well as a platform where young people can exchange experiences.
The tournament, which was organized as part of the Demilgeluu Jashtar project, gave participants the opportunity to practise their debate, public speaking and analysis skills.
