Hosting summer debate schools are an old and much loved tradition in IDEA CA and we were delighted to be able to do so again this year, with the courses finishing in August. The goal of these courses is to help young people achieve their potential, with a particular emphasis on their debate skills and critical and analytical thinking.
As part of the Demilgeluu Jashtar project, a debate tournament was held on 15 September 2018. The tournament was attended by 50 schoolchildren from Naryn and Kochkor and saw debaters discuss youth participation in decision-making processes at the local level, allocation of quotas for young people in local councils, and issues of regional development.
IDEA CA has recently worked with high school students in Issyk-Ata district (Chui Province) and Suzak district (Jalalabad Province) to teach them about how to open and manage debate clubs at school, as well as general information about debate.
